If you are planning a day trip from Lima to Huacachina Oasis, then you are in the right place.
I spent three months backpacking Peru, and though I loved Machu Picchu and Cusco, my favorite place in the whole country is actually the Huacachina Oasis. Between the towering sand dunes, the beautiful sunsets, and activities like sandboarding and dune buggy rides, it was impossible not to fall in love with it.
That is why I’ve put together this updated 2026 guide to taking a Lima to Huacachina day trip, so you can experience this magical side of Peru that so many travelers skip!

Can You Do A Day Trip From Lima To Huacachina?
Short answer: yes, a day trip from Lima to Huacachina is doable, but the two are a long way apart (307 km!). Our honest advice is to only do it on a guided tour, because the public bus simply eats up too much of your day.
By public bus, you’re looking at around 5 hours from Lima to Ica (the gateway city to Huacachina), then another 15 minutes by taxi to the oasis itself. That’s a lot of time on the road and a lot of effort for just a few hours among the dunes!
A guided tour from Lima to Huacachina takes care of all the transportation headaches and more. Tours usually include sandboarding as well as a dune buggy ride. Make sure you pick one that includes a visit to Ballestas Island, aka the “Poor Man’s Galapagos.”
Plenty of travelers squeeze Huacachina into a day trip from Lima, and that’s totally fine if you’re short on time. But if you can, we recommend giving Peru’s most famous desert oasis the time it deserves and staying a night or two.
How To Get From Lima to Huacachina
By Public Bus
Taking the public bus from Lima to the Huacachina desert oasis is definitely possible, but the ride takes around 5 hours each way. With 10 hours of round-trip travel, this option really doesn’t work if you only want to visit Huacachina on a day trip from Lima.
There is no direct public bus between Lima and Huacachina. Instead, you ride from Lima to Ica, and from the Ica Bus Station (where you get dropped off) you catch a small moto taxi (they look like tuk-tuks) for the 15-minute journey into Huacachina.
Two of the best-known bus companies on the route between Lima and Huacachina are PeruBus and Cruz Del Sur. PeruBus is the more affordable option and has plenty of daily departures.
Cruz Del Sur, on the other hand, is the comfortable choice, with roomy seats on spacious buses, and it’s widely seen as one of the best bus companies in Peru.

By Guided Tour
The easiest (and in our opinion, the best) way to do a Lima to Huacachina day trip is on a guided tour.
A tour takes all the stress out of reaching this magical oasis. Most of them come with a knowledgeable bilingual guide, a dune buggy ride and sandboarding session in Huacachina, plus pick-up and drop-off at most Lima hotels, so all you have to do is show up.
This particular full-day tour is a fantastic option, because on top of the stop in Huacachina, you also get a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands (often called the “Poor Man’s Galapagos“), where you can see sea lions and Humboldt penguins up close.
It’s fair to say this is one bucket-list-worthy Peru experience, with unique wildlife on the Ballestas Islands in the morning and sandboarding and a dune buggy ride across the massive Huacachina sand dunes in the afternoon.
You’ll also get some free time to wander around Huacachina and maybe grab lunch at one of the lakefront restaurants. Lunch usually isn’t included on tours like this one (double check when you book), so it’s a good idea to refuel here.
Things To Do On A Huacachina Day Trip
Dune Bashing on A Dune Buggy
Without a doubt, the most popular thing to do in Huacachina is an adrenaline-pumping dune buggy tour.
Within minutes of arriving, you’ll spot dune buggies tearing across the sand dunes that circle the town. Think of these unique vehicles as Huacachina’s taxis, because they are the only safe way to get around this unusual terrain.
A dune buggy tour in Huacachina is truly bucket-list-worthy, because you get driven up and down some of the biggest sand dunes in South America in a high-powered vehicle. It feels like a one-of-a-kind roller coaster ride as your driver speeds up and down the super-steep dunes.
Being the number one activity in the oasis, you won’t struggle to find a dune buggy tour, as heaps of operators run them. Most are half-day trips that throw in sandboarding too (more on that below!).
Depending on your budget, you can go with a private or group tour! You can book these tours online in advance, from one of the street sellers in Huacachina, or through your hotel if you decide to stay the night.
And if you have picked a guided tour from Lima, like the one I mentioned earlier in this post, a dune buggy ride will already be included in your package.
Sandboarding
The second most popular of the Huacachina tours is sandboarding. As we said earlier, Huacachina has some of the steepest sand dunes in South America, and many of the dunes here rise well over a hundred feet tall! So, as you can imagine, flying down them on a board is so much fun!
You can sandboard in Huacachina in two ways: lying on your belly (easy and hilarious), or standing up, which is a lot harder to pull off.
For the belly version, all you need to do is rent a sandboard from one of the shops in town and walk out to one of the huge dunes surrounding Huacachina. Not sure which dune to pick? Just ask a local or the staff at the rental shop. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting sandy, because the sand gets everywhere!
If you’re keen to try Huacachina sandboarding standing up (like snowboarding, but on sand, of course), then it’s best to book a dedicated sandboarding tour.
That way, an experienced guide can show you how to handle the steep terrain and help you choose the right equipment (you can pick a sandboard, a snowboard, or even snow skis for sand skiing).
If you get to Huacachina on a guided tour from Lima, sandboarding on your stomach is included as part of the tour. Most tours from Lima give you about an hour of sandboarding.
If you are really into sandboarding (like we are), we recommend doing it on your own, since you’ll get more time on the dunes. If time is on your side, we find 2 to 3 hours of sandboarding is plenty.
Catch The Sunset Above The Dunes
We don’t know about you, but finding a great sunset spot is one of our favorite parts of traveling. And it doesn’t get much more unique than watching the sun drop behind some of the most impressive sand dunes in South America.
You can catch this magical sunset from several spots, but the most popular one is about a 20-minute walk from town. To get to Huacachina’s famous sunset spot, walk toward where the dune buggies are parked (you can’t miss them), then turn right and walk up the sand dune.
Along the way you’ll pass a large water tank, and soon after that you’ll reach the top of the dune. Walking up soft sand is harder than it looks, so take your time and bring some water. You’ll probably have plenty of company heading to the same spot, so if in doubt, just follow the crowds.
The view at sunset is truly wow-worthy. You’ll see the Huacachina oasis right below you, backed by sand dunes glowing in shades of orange and pink.
Relax by the Oasis
The small town of Huacachina (would you believe it’s home to only around 100 permanent residents!) is built around a small desert lagoon known locally as “the Oasis.” The history of the lagoon is fascinating, as people once believed its waters had healing powers.
Swimming in the lagoon isn’t allowed, and to be honest, the water is quite dirty, so you wouldn’t want to anyway. Renting a paddleboat is the better way to get out on the water, and 30 minutes to an hour is plenty of time for it.
The Huacachina Oasis is ringed by palm trees, a boardwalk, and several bars and restaurants, which makes it the perfect spot to unwind after a long morning of traveling and dune bashing.
If you have an hour or so, take a short stroll along the boardwalk, hire a paddleboat for 30 minutes, and finish your time here with a drink or lunch at one of the scenic restaurants.
Take A Dune Buggy To The Middle of Nowhere
Adrenaline junkies, this one’s for you! Hire a private dune buggy to whisk you deep into the desert, far from town, so you can get a real feel for this otherworldly landscape.
Unfortunately, for safety reasons, you can’t drive these high-powered buggies yourself; a professional driver will take the wheel instead.
Would you believe a dune buggy can reach seriously high speeds out here? So, it’s probably for the best that tourists can’t drive them, plus the desert terrain is notoriously tricky to maneuver.
The desert surrounding Huacachina is huge (it’s part of the long coastal desert that runs down Peru’s Pacific coast), which means there’s plenty of terrain to explore, and you’re unlikely to come across many other buggies.

If you are like me and super prone to injury (yup…), it’s worth getting travel insurance before your day trip to Huacachina. Sandboarding and flying over dunes in a buggy are a blast, but both come with real risks, and you don’t want a sprained wrist to also become a huge medical bill.

Huacachina Oasis is still one of my favorite places in Peru, and if you have the time, we highly recommend a visit. If a day trip from Lima is all you can fit in, then do yourself a favor and book a guided tour so you spend your energy on the dunes instead of on buses.
